Where to walk in each destination, with the season, terrain and access details that determine whether a route works.

The useful measure of a walk is not its distance but its ascent, its surface and its exposure. A ten-kilometre route with a thousand metres of climb on loose rock is a different day out from the same distance along a valley floor, and published times assume steady walking in good conditions with few stops. Add time for the descent, which is slower than most people expect, and for navigation where waymarking is sparse.

Season governs everything in mountain country. Snow lingers on north-facing slopes and high passes long after the valleys are green, huts and mountain transport open and close on fixed dates, and afternoon storms are close to daily in some ranges through summer. In hot climates the constraint is reversed: walking is confined to the early morning, and water sources may be dry. Check whether a route crosses ground that requires a permit, a guide, or a booking for overnight accommodation.

Preparation failures are consistent. Underestimating water, relying on a phone with no offline map or spare power, ignoring forecast wind chill, and starting too late are the common ones. Tell someone the intended route and return time where there is no phone signal. Local rules on wild camping, fires, dogs and rights of access differ sharply between countries, and grazing land and hunting seasons may affect where walking is welcome.
