Mount Meru Summit Trek

Challenging

The classic four-day ascent of Tanzania's second highest peak (4,565m). The route from Momella Gate passes through montane forest (with buffalo, giraffe, and colobus monkeys), heath and moorland, and a dramatic ash cone walk to the summit. Views of Kilimanjaro at sunrise from the summit are legendary.

Ngurdoto Crater Rim Trail

Easy to Moderate
📏 10 km circular⏱️ 3–4 hours

A scenic circular walk around the rim of Ngurdoto Crater (the 'Little Ngorongoro') within Arusha National Park. The trail passes through lush montane forest with colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, and buffalo. Excellent views into the crater floor below.

Momella Lakes Nature Walk

A guided walking safari around the seven Momella Lakes within Arusha National Park. The flat walk passes flamingo-fringed lakes, giraffe, zebra, and waterbuck with Mount Meru as a dramatic backdrop. Walking safaris in a national park are a rare and special experience.

Lake Duluti Forest Walk

Easy
📏 4 km circular⏱️ 1.5–2.5 hours

A peaceful circular trail through the Lake Duluti Forest Reserve around the rim of this volcanic crater lake east of Arusha. The forest is home to colobus monkeys, a variety of kingfisher species, and fish eagles. The trail descends to the lakeside where canoe tours are available.

Olmoti Crater Walk (Ngorongoro)

Moderate
📏 12 km return⏱️ 4–5 hours

A guided walk from Nainokanoka village in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area up to the rim of Olmoti Crater, then down to a beautiful waterfall. Requires an overnight in the NCA. A Maasai guide is mandatory and leads you through highland grasslands with stunning views.

Empakaai Crater Walk (Ngorongoro)

Moderate to Challenging

Empakaai Crater is a deep, forest-rimmed volcanic crater in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area containing a flamingo lake. The walk down into the crater and around the lake is one of the most spectacular hikes in East Africa, requiring a local guide and overnight in the area.

Mount Meru Acclimatisation Day Walk (Arusha National Park)

Easy to Moderate

A shorter acclimatisation hike within Arusha National Park on the lower slopes of Mount Meru, suitable for those planning to climb higher but wanting to begin gently. The trail passes through beautiful montane forest with colobus monkeys, buffalo, and excellent birdlife.

Usa River Nature Trails (private)

Easy
📏 3–8 km (variable)⏱️ 1.5–3 hours

Several lodges around Usa River (Rivertrees, Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge) maintain private nature trails through their coffee farms, avocado orchards, and riverine forest. Non-guests can often arrange guided walks through the lodge reception. Excellent birdwatching.
