What to watch out for on the trail.
Hazard: Wildfires (July–September): check fogos.pt before entering wooded areas; follow all park authority closure signs
Hazard: Rapid weather changes in Gerês: cloud and rain can arrive without warning even in summer — always carry a waterproof layer
Hazard: Wild boar in Gerês: common at dawn/dusk; give them space if encountered and do not approach
Hazard: Poor mobile signal in Gerês park interior: download offline maps (Maps.me) and inform park visitor centre of your route
Hazard: Atlantic rip currents on coastal walks with beach access: only swim at flagged lifeguard beaches
Hazard: Slippery granite in wet conditions: common throughout Gerês and Serra do Marão — use trekking poles in autumn and winter
