Stay on marked trails. Getting lost in unfamiliar terrain can be dangerous. Carry navigation tools.

Local Hazards

  • Rapid weather changes on fell plateaus—always carry warm layers and waterproof gear
  • Navigation challenge: above treeline, trails may not be visible in fog or snow
  • Biting insects (mosquitoes, blackflies) are intense near wetlands in June–July; bring DEET repellent
  • Reindeer and elk encounters—give them space, especially calving season (May–June)
  • River crossings can be dangerous during spring snowmelt (April–May) when water levels are high
  • Mobile phone coverage is very poor in national park interiors—carry a map and compass
  • Bears and wolverines are present in Lapland's wilderness; make noise while hiking and store food correctly

Best Time to Hike

Plan your hiking adventure for optimal conditions.

🌸 Spring

April–May can be muddy and slushy; late May offers first summer trails but rivers are high from snowmelt

☀️ Summer

June–August is prime hiking season with excellent conditions, long daylight (24hr in June), and good trail access

🍂 Fall

September–October is spectacular with ruska autumn colors; hiking conditions excellent; first snow possible on fells by October

❄️ Winter

Many summer trails converted to ski tracks; snowshoe and ski touring possible on most routes; daylight very limited
