The best hikes Normandy has to offer.

GR21 Coastal Path (Étretat to Fécamp)

Moderate
⏱️ 3–5 days (full route) or day sections

The GR21 is the classic Normandy coastal long-distance walk along the Côte d'Albâtre (Alabaster Coast). The cliff-top sections between Étretat and Fécamp are the most dramatic — towering white chalk cliffs with natural arches, the detached Aiguille d'Étretat needle, and sweeping Channel views. Day sections can be walked from Étretat to Yport (12km, 4h) or Yport to Fécamp (14km, 5h).

Highlights: Falaise d'Aval and d'Amont arches at Étretat, Cap Fagnet viewpoint above Fécamp, Yport village, Vaucottes cove, Sunrise views from clifftops

GR21 Étretat to Yport Day Walk

Moderate
⏱️ 4 hours

The finest single-day section of the GR21, taking in the full drama of the Étretat cliffs (Falaise d'Aval with its arch and needle, Falaise d'Amont with its memorial) before continuing to the small fishing village of Yport on a high clifftop path with sea views throughout.

Highlights: Falaise d'Aval arch and Aiguille needle, Falaise d'Amont and aviators' monument, Clifftop meadows with wildflowers, Yport village descent

GR223 Cotentin Coastal Walk (Tour de la Manche)

Moderate to Strenuous
⏱️ 14–20 days (full tour) or day sections

A major long-distance coastal walk circling the entire Cotentin Peninsula from Mont-Saint-Michel, around Cap de la Hague (the northwestern tip), and down the D-Day beaches coast. The northwestern sections (Cap de la Hague) are wild and spectacular — dramatic headlands, strong tides, and remote hamlets. The D-Day sections are historically profound.

Highlights: Cap de la Hague headlands, Goury lifeboat station, Barfleur village and lighthouse, Utah Beach coast, Mont-Saint-Michel approach through salt marshes

Mont-Saint-Michel Bay Walking

Easy to Moderate
⏱️ 2–5 hours

Guided walks across the tidal sandflats of the Mont-Saint-Michel bay are among the most extraordinary experiences in Normandy. Professional guides lead groups across the sands, through the channels, and to the island on foot during low tide — the same approach used by medieval pilgrims. Do NOT attempt this without a guide — the tides are lethal.

Highlights: Walking across the sands to the island, Views of Mont-Saint-Michel rising from the flat bay, Sand channels and quicksand sections (safe with guide), Meeting the incoming tide

D-Day Beaches Walking Circuit (Gold Beach Area)

Easy
⏱️ 2.5 hours

A gentle coastal walk linking the key sites around Gold Beach: starting at Arromanches with the Mulberry harbour views, along the clifftop to the Arromanches 360 cinema, and along the beach past the offshore harbour remains. An accessible walk combining history and coastal scenery.

Highlights: Mulberry harbour remains offshore, Arromanches 360 clifftop cinema, Wide sandy Gold Beach, Longues-sur-Mer battery (2km inland detour)

Seine Valley Walk: Jumièges to Saint-Wandrille

Easy
⏱️ 3 hours

A beautiful river valley walk through the forested Seine valley between two remarkable abbeys. The path follows the Seine riverside through deciduous forest, past orchards and small villages. Both abbeys merit a visit: Jumièges for its romantic ruins, Saint-Wandrille as a living monastery.

Highlights: Abbaye de Jumièges ruins, Seine valley forest, Riverside meadows, Abbaye de Saint-Wandrille Gregorian chant (daily services open to visitors)

Perche Regional Park: La Forêt de Bellême

Easy to Moderate
⏱️ 3–4 hours

The Forêt de Bellême is an ancient oak forest in the southern Perche, a quiet corner of inland Normandy. Waymarked walks thread through centuries-old oak groves, past ponds and meadows. The medieval town of Bellême itself has a fine market and 17th-century fortifications.

Highlights: Ancient oak woodland, Étang de la Herse pond, Bellême medieval town, Autumn mushrooms (chanterelles, ceps)

Falaises des Vaches Noires Walk

Easy to Moderate
⏱️ 4 hours (return)

The Vaches Noires cliffs between Houlgate and Villers-sur-Mer are famous among fossil hunters — Jurassic marine fossils (ammonites, belemnites) erode from the black clay cliffs and can be found on the beach below at low tide. The clifftop walk and beach walk both have their charms. Check tide times for beach access.

Highlights: Fossil hunting at low tide, Dramatic dark clay cliffs, Views towards Deauville, Houlgate and Villers-sur-Mer villages
