🟡 Moderate

🟠 Challenging

Essential Gear

Day Hikes

Local Hazards

  • Mosquitoes and midges in Lapland July-August - carry DEET repellent
  • Ticks in southern Finland forests May-October - check after walks, consider TBE vaccine
  • Reindeer on roads and trails in Lapland - approach slowly, never corner them
  • Rapid weather changes especially on open fells - carry waterproofs year-round
  • Winter: hypothermia and frostbite risk - dress in layers, cover all exposed skin below -10°C
  • Crossing frozen lakes: only use marked ice roads, ice thickness can be deceptive
  • Wildfires in dry periods: open fires banned June-August in many areas, use designated fire pits

🌸 Spring

May-June: snow melts reveal soggy terrain. Lower trails accessible by late May, fells by mid-June. Midnight sun begins late May in Lapland. Wildflowers emerge, bird watching excellent.

☀️ Summer

July-August: Peak season, all trails accessible, long daylight hours (24h sun in Lapland). Warm, possible thunderstorms. Mosquitoes in Lapland can be severe - repellent essential.

🍂 Fall

September-October: Best season for colors (ruska). Crowds diminish, cooler temperatures ideal for hiking. Northern Lights season begins. First snow on fells in late September.

❄️ Winter

November-April: Most trails require snowshoes or skis. Marked winter trails at ski resorts. Polar night in Lapland (December-January). Extreme cold requires proper equipment.
