When to hike

Seasonal conditions in Greece.

Spring
March to May is ideal in lowland areas and Mediterranean islands. Wildflowers are spectacular, temperatures are mild (15-22C), and trails are uncrowded. Samaria Gorge opens in late April or early May depending on snow melt.
Summer
June is excellent in the mountains before excessive heat. July-August sees high temperatures in lowlands (35-40C) - stick to early morning starts or high-altitude routes on Olympus or Taygetos. Island hikes are best before 9am or after 5pm.
Fall
September and October offer the best combination of comfortable temperatures, clear skies, and minimal crowds. The mountains are accessible without heat stress, and the Meltemi winds have died down on the islands.
Winter
November to February: lowland trails in Crete and the Mani remain walkable. Northern mountains receive significant snowfall - Olympus, Taygetos, and Pindos require crampons and winter experience. Meteora and Pelion trails are quiet and atmospheric.

Local hazards

What to watch out for on the trail.

Medium

Hazard: Extreme summer heat: temperatures exceed 40C in July-August - start hikes before 8am and carry 3+ litres of water per person

Medium

Hazard: Sun exposure: Greek summer sun is intense at altitude - use SPF 50+, wear hat and long sleeves on mountain ridges

Medium

Hazard: Loose rock and marble: ancient paths and archaeological sites have slippery, uneven marble and loose stone surfaces - wear hiking boots, not trainers

Medium

Hazard: Vipers (Macrovipera schweizeri and Vipera ammodytes): present throughout Greece, especially in rocky areas - watch where you put hands and feet, wear gaiters in scrubland

Medium

Hazard: Jellyfish: mauve stinger jellyfish (Pelagia noctiluca) swarms occur August-September - check local beach conditions before swimming after hikes

Medium

Hazard: Forest fires: July-August fire risk is extreme - check local fire alerts before heading into forested areas, especially in Attica, Peloponnese, and Chios
