Local Hazards

  • Monsoon (June-September): Slippery trails, swollen streams, and reduced visibility. Several trails are officially unsafe during peak monsoon.
  • Sun exposure: The Sahyadri range has intense sun at altitude; carry sunscreen, hat, and 3+ liters of water per person.
  • Loose scree and rock: Several fort ascents have unstable rocky sections; sturdy footwear with ankle support is essential.
  • Wildlife: Leopards inhabit the Sahyadri; while attacks are very rare, avoid hiking at dusk and dawn in forested areas.
  • Mobile signal: Many Sahyadri treks have no mobile connectivity; always inform your accommodation of your itinerary.
  • Getting lost: Sahyadri trails are not always well-marked; hire a local guide for unfamiliar routes or use offline maps.

Best Time to Hike

Plan your hiking adventure for optimal conditions.

❄️ Winter

November-February: Cool and comfortable temperatures, clear skies for best views. Some water sources on trails may be dry.
