Sindh is Pakistan's southeastern coastal province, anchored by the sprawling port megacity of Karachi and stretching north along the Indus River to the ancient ruins of Mohenjo-daro. The province blends a major commercial capital with Sufi shrine culture, desert landscapes in the Tharparkar region, and some of South Asia's most significant archaeological and funerary sites, including the UNESCO-listed Makli Necropolis near Thatta.

Local hazards

What to watch out for on the trail.

Medium

Hazard: Sindh's plains, the Kirthar hills, and the Thar Desert have very little shade cover; summer heat (April-September) regularly exceeds 40C, with the Thar Desert and Indus plain among the hottest parts of Pakistan. Early-morning starts and carrying at least 2 litres of water are essential.

Medium

Hazard: Venomous snakes, including saw-scaled vipers and cobras, are present in the Kirthar hills and Thar Desert scrub; stick to marked paths and tracks, wear closed footwear, and take care around rocks and dry vegetation.

Medium

Hazard: Ranikot Fort's outer ramparts are remote and only partly accessible by vehicle, with no rescue infrastructure along the outer perimeter; the Thar Desert's tracks near Nagarparkar can disorient walkers without local knowledge, and a 4x4 or local guide is recommended for any route away from the main roads.
