Mount Kinabalu Summit Trail (Timpohon Route)

The most famous climb in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, following a well-maintained granite trail through six vegetation zones — from submontane forest to alpine scrub and bare granite summit. The two-day guided climb is an extraordinary physical and visual achievement with dawn views extending to the Philippines on clear days.

Mount Kinabalu Via Ferrata (Low's Peak Circuit)

The world's highest via ferrata system, installed on the granite summit plateau of Mount Kinabalu. Iron rungs, steel cables, and suspension bridges are bolted into the rock, allowing trekkers to traverse dramatic cliff faces and gorges at elevation. Two routes: Mountain Torq (easier) and Low's Peak Circuit (more challenging).

Kinabalu Park Nature Trails (Day Trails)

A network of day-hiking trails around Kinabalu Park HQ including the Silau-Silau Trail (2.8km loop through cloud forest), Kiau View Trail (panoramic views), and the Summit Trail day-hike to Layang-Layang shelter. Excellent for birding, pitcher plants, and highland flora without the summit climb.

Poring Hot Springs to Langanan Waterfall

A rewarding jungle trail from Poring Hot Springs through lowland rainforest to the spectacular 120-metre Langanan Waterfall — one of Sabah's tallest cascades. The trail passes through secondary forest with chances of seeing gibbons, hornbills, and pitcher plants.

Danum Valley Rainforest Trails

A network of trails through 130-million-year-old primary lowland dipterocarp rainforest guided by expert naturalists. The Coffin Cliff trail reveals indigenous Kadazan-Dusun burial sites; the Hornbill Trail is exceptional for birdwatching; night walks reveal civets, slow lorises, and flying squirrels.

Mount Trus Madi Trail

A challenging and spectacular trail to Sabah's second-highest summit through montane forest, pitcher plant valleys, and mossy cloud forest. Far less crowded than Kinabalu but equally rewarding for serious trekkers, with outstanding biodiversity including rare nepenthes pitcher plant species.

Crocker Range Day Hikes

Tawau Hills State Park Trails

Mesilau Nature Resort Trail (Alternative Kinabalu Route)

  • Dehydration — carry at least 2 litres water for any day hike; more for summit climb
