Local hazards

What to watch out for on the trail.

Medium

Hazard: Dehydration: Barcelona's summer heat (July–August) and exposed trails are a genuine dehydration risk. Carry minimum 2L water; 3L for longer mountain routes.

Medium

Hazard: Sun: UV index high April–September. Use SPF 50 even when overcast. Lightweight long-sleeved shirts are a sensible alternative to repeated re-application.

Medium

Hazard: Terrain: Montserrat rock is friable and slippery after rain. Walking poles and boots with ankle support strongly recommended.

Medium

Hazard: Wind: Montserrat summit and ridgelines can be very exposed to cold wind even in summer — bring a windproof layer.

Medium

Hazard: Mountain weather: Summer afternoon thunderstorms form quickly in the Montseny and Montserrat massifs. Check forecast (AEMET app or aemet.es) and descend before 2PM if storms forecast.

Medium

Hazard: Wildfires: During periods of extreme heat and drought, some trails in Garraf and Collserola may be closed. Check with the Parc Natural visitor centres.

Medium

Hazard: Navigation: Signage is good on main Montserrat routes but less reliable in Collserola and Garraf. Download offline maps via AllTrails or wikiloc before departure.

Medium

Hazard: Tick season: May–October in forested areas (Montseny, Collserola). Wear long trousers and check skin after every hike. Lyme disease is present but uncommon.
