HIGH

Stay on marked trails. Getting lost in unfamiliar terrain can be dangerous. Carry navigation tools.

MEDIUM

Be aware of wildlife. Research local animals and know how to respond to encounters.

Local Hazards

  • Extreme heat — carry a minimum of 1.5-2 litres of water per person for any walk exceeding 1 hour; start no later than 8 AM in summer
  • Loose desert sand and rocky surfaces — wear closed-toe shoes or trail shoes (not sandals) for west bank trails
  • Sun exposure — wide-brim hat and SPF 50+ sunscreen essential on all exposed trails
  • Limited shade — plan for no shade cover on most west bank and desert trails
  • Nile currents — do not wade into the Nile at rocky or current-active sections; crocodiles present in remote Nile stretches south of Aswan
  • No trail markers on west bank — take a licensed guide or hire a boat captain who knows the paths for first visits

Best Time to Hike

Plan your hiking adventure for optimal conditions.

🌸 Spring

March-April good but watch for Khamaseen wind/dust; trails hot by May

☀️ Summer

June-August dangerous — extreme heat (40-48°C) makes all outdoor hiking potentially life-threatening without extreme precautions; dawn-only possible

🍂 Fall

October-November excellent — comfortable temperatures, fewer hikers

❄️ Winter

December-February best — perfect temperatures for all trails; mornings can be cool
