Aswan is Egypt's southernmost governorate, a sun-drenched city on the banks of the Nile renowned for its ancient Nubian heritage, towering pharaonic monuments, and dramatic desert-island scenery. Top Hiking Trails
The best hikes Aswan has to offer.
West Bank Desert Trail to St. Simeon's Monastery
moderateA rewarding desert hike from the west bank Nile shore across sandy terrain and low granite hills to the spectacularly preserved 7th-century Coptic monastery. The path crosses classic Saharan desert with scattered acacia trees and views of the Nile and Aswan city behind you.
Nobles' Tombs and Qubbet El-Hawa Hilltop Walk
easyA short but scenic walk from the Nile ferry landing up to the ancient tombs carved into the west bank cliffs, continuing to the hilltop dome of Qubbet El-Hawa. The final exposed hilltop offers perhaps the best panoramic view of Aswan, the Nile, its islands and the surrounding desert.
Sehel Island Nature and Heritage Walk
easyA flat walk around this small Nile island combining the 250+ ancient inscriptions and stelae with the Nubian village and dramatic granite boulder scenery. The island rises sharply from the Nile in large smooth grey boulders perfect for scrambling.
Elephantine Island Heritage Loop
easyA leisurely walk around the perimeter of Elephantine Island visiting the southern ancient ruins, the Aswan Museum, the Nilometer, both Nubian villages (Siou and Koti) and the Movenpick Resort gardens before looping back to the ferry.
West Bank Desert Camel Trek Route (on foot)
moderateFollowing the camel trekking route on foot from the west bank ferry landing, across the desert, past the Agha Khan Mausoleum hill and continuing to St. Simeon's Monastery. This is the most adventurous walk available from central Aswan and feels genuinely wilderness-like despite the proximity to the city.
Abu Simbel Cliff Walk
easyA walk along the Lake Nasser shore and cliff paths around the Abu Simbel temple complex, including the path to the hilltop viewing point above the temples which offers an extraordinary perspective on the rock-cut facade.
Kom Ombo Temple and Sugarcane Fields Walk
easyA walk from Kom Ombo town through sugarcane fields to the riverside temple, then along the Nile bank with views of feluccas and agricultural life. The setting of the temple on the Nile bend is particularly beautiful.
Aswan Corniche and Botanical Garden Walk
easyA pleasant city walk along the full length of the Aswan corniche from the train station to the Old Cataract Hotel, taking the public ferry to Kitchener's Island for the botanical garden, then returning. Combines city atmosphere with island tranquillity.

Local Hazards
- Extreme heat — carry a minimum of 1.5-2 litres of water per person for any walk exceeding 1 hour; start no later than 8 AM in summer
- Loose desert sand and rocky surfaces — wear closed-toe shoes or trail shoes (not sandals) for west bank trails
- Sun exposure — wide-brim hat and SPF 50+ sunscreen essential on all exposed trails
- Limited shade — plan for no shade cover on most west bank and desert trails
- Nile currents — do not wade into the Nile at rocky or current-active sections; crocodiles present in remote Nile stretches south of Aswan
- No trail markers on west bank — take a licensed guide or hire a boat captain who knows the paths for first visits
