Hiking Safety

Local Hazards
- Auckland's UV index is extreme; apply SPF50+ even on cloudy days
- West coast surf beaches have powerful rip currents; never swim alone
- Kauri dieback disease is a serious threat; ALWAYS clean boots at wash stations before and after entering kauri areas
- Some Waitakere Ranges tracks are closed due to kauri dieback; check Department of Conservation website before visiting
- Rangitoto and other volcanic islands have no freshwater; carry at least 2L per person
- Cell coverage is limited in the Waitakere Ranges and outer islands
