Explore the best hiking trails and trekking routes in Sicily.
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, renowned for its rich history, stunning coastlines, ancient Greek temples, and vibrant culinary traditions. A crossroads of civilizations for millennia, it bears the cultural imprints of Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, and Spanish conquerors. Today Sicily enchants visitors with its baroque cities, volcanic landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and some of Italy's finest cuisine.
Top Hiking Trails
The best hikes Sicily has to offer.
Mount Etna Summit Crater Trek
hardThe classic Etna experience — hiking to the summit crater of Europe's highest active volcano at 3,357m. A certified guide is compulsory above 2,900m. The landscape of ash fields, lava flows, and steaming fumaroles is unlike anywhere else in Europe. Views extend to the Italian mainland on clear days.
Zingaro Nature Reserve Coastal Trail
easySicily's most beloved coastal walk, traversing seven secluded coves along the pristine north-west coast. The trail passes through Mediterranean maquis — wild carob, olive, and euphorbia — with stunning views of turquoise coves below. No cars, no roads — just one of Sicily's most beautiful landscapes.
Alcantara Gorge Walk
easyA walk through one of Sicily's most dramatic geological formations — basalt columnar lava formations carved by the Alcantara river into a cathedral-like gorge. Visitors can wade through the icy river in summer or walk along the cliff-top paths for aerial views of the canyon.
Madonie Mountains: Piano Battaglia to Monte Carbonara
moderateThe highest peak in the Madonie Natural Park offers spectacular panoramas across Sicily to Etna and the Aeolian Islands. The route passes through beech forests, rocky limestone ridges, and alpine meadows — a very different landscape from the coast. Wild mushrooms in autumn.
La Rocca di Cefalù
moderateA steep hike up the dramatic cliff that looms over Cefalù town, past megalithic ruins and a medieval fortification to a flat summit with magnificent views over the town, coast, and sea. Best done in early morning before the heat.
Stromboli Volcano Night Hike
hardOne of the world's most extraordinary volcano hikes — ascending the flanks of the constantly erupting Stromboli at dusk to watch lava explosions from the Sciara del Fuoco (river of fire) against the night sky. Guides are mandatory above 400m. Unforgettable.
Pantalica Gorge Trail
moderateA spectacular gorge walk through a UNESCO-listed landscape containing the largest Bronze Age rock-cut necropolis in Europe — over 5,000 tombs carved into the limestone cliffs. The Anapo and Calcinara rivers run through the gorge creating beautiful pools. Wild orchids in spring.
Etna Valle del Bove Circular Trek
moderateA spectacular circular walk around the rim of the Valle del Bove — a massive caldera on the eastern flank of Etna — offering the best views of recent lava flows and the Valle del Bove itself (8km wide, 1,000m deep). Stunning Etna wine country views on the descent.
Nebrodi Mountains: Portella Femmina Morta Trail
moderateA walk through the Nebrodi Natural Park — Sicily's largest natural park — through ancient oak forests and Mediterranean highland meadows that feel remarkably remote. The Nebrodi semi-wild horses and Nero dei Nebrodi pigs (an ancient breed) are often seen on the trails.
Scopello to Zingaro Reserve North Entrance
easyA short but beautiful coastal walk from the hamlet of Scopello past the historic Tonnara (tuna fishery) and faraglioni sea stacks to the southern entrance of the Zingaro Reserve. The views of the stacks and turquoise sea below are outstanding.
