Mount Etna Summit Crater Trek

The classic Etna experience — hiking to the summit crater of Europe's highest active volcano at 3,357m. A certified guide is compulsory above 2,900m. Zingaro Nature Reserve Coastal Trail

Sicily's most beloved coastal walk, traversing seven secluded coves along the pristine north-west coast. The trail passes through Mediterranean maquis — wild carob, olive, and euphorbia — with stunning views of turquoise coves below. No cars, no roads — just one of Sicily's most beautiful landscapes.

Alcantara Gorge Walk

A walk through one of Sicily's most dramatic geological formations — basalt columnar lava formations carved by the Alcantara river into a cathedral-like gorge. Visitors can wade through the icy river in summer or walk along the cliff-top paths for aerial views of the canyon.

Madonie Mountains: Piano Battaglia to Monte Carbonara

The highest peak in the Madonie Natural Park offers spectacular panoramas across Sicily to Etna and the Aeolian Islands. The route passes through beech forests, rocky limestone ridges, and alpine meadows — a very different landscape from the coast. Wild mushrooms in autumn.

La Rocca di Cefalù

A steep hike up the dramatic cliff that looms over Cefalù town, past megalithic ruins and a medieval fortification to a flat summit with magnificent views over the town, coast, and sea. Best done in early morning before the heat.

Stromboli Volcano Night Hike

One of the world's most extraordinary volcano hikes — ascending the flanks of the constantly erupting Stromboli at dusk to watch lava explosions from the Sciara del Fuoco (river of fire) against the night sky. Guides are mandatory above 400m. Unforgettable.

Pantalica Gorge Trail

A spectacular gorge walk through a UNESCO-listed landscape containing the largest Bronze Age rock-cut necropolis in Europe — over 5,000 tombs carved into the limestone cliffs. The Anapo and Calcinara rivers run through the gorge creating beautiful pools. Wild orchids in spring.

Etna Valle del Bove Circular Trek

A spectacular circular walk around the rim of the Valle del Bove — a massive caldera on the eastern flank of Etna — offering the best views of recent lava flows and the Valle del Bove itself (8km wide, 1,000m deep). Stunning Etna wine country views on the descent.

Nebrodi Mountains: Portella Femmina Morta Trail

A walk through the Nebrodi Natural Park — Sicily's largest natural park — through ancient oak forests and Mediterranean highland meadows that feel remarkably remote. The Nebrodi semi-wild horses and Nero dei Nebrodi pigs (an ancient breed) are often seen on the trails.

Scopello to Zingaro Reserve North Entrance

A short but beautiful coastal walk from the hamlet of Scopello past the historic Tonnara (tuna fishery) and faraglioni sea stacks to the southern entrance of the Zingaro Reserve. The views of the stacks and turquoise sea below are outstanding.

🟢 Easy

Flat or gently undulating terrain; suitable for families and beginners; well-marked paths. Examples: Zingaro coastal trail, Alcantara gorge.

🟡 Moderate

Some elevation gain; reasonable fitness required; good footwear essential. Examples: La Rocca di Cefalù, Pantalica Gorge, Madonie peaks.

🟠 Challenging

Hiking Safety

Stay safe on the trails.

CRITICAL

Always tell someone your hiking plans and expected return time. Carry emergency communication device in remote areas.

HIGH

Check weather conditions before setting out. Turn back if conditions deteriorate. Never underestimate mountains.

Stay on marked trails. Getting lost in unfamiliar terrain can be dangerous. Carry navigation tools.

MEDIUM

Be aware of wildlife. Research local animals and know how to respond to encounters.

Local Hazards

  • Mount Etna: Volcanic gases (SO2) near active craters — guide mandatory above 2,900m; check volcanic activity status before hiking
  • Sun and heat: At lower altitudes in summer, temperatures exceed 35°C — carry minimum 2 litres of water per person
  • Loose lava rock on Etna trails — ankle-twisting risk; wear ankle-supporting boots
  • Rocky coastal paths (Zingaro) become extremely slippery when wet — non-slip footwear essential
  • Stromboli volcanic activity is unpredictable — guides monitor conditions and can adjust or abandon hike if necessary
  • Rural areas of Nebrodi and Madonie may have limited mobile signal — download offline maps and inform someone of your route

Best Time to Hike

Plan your hiking adventure for optimal conditions.

🌸 Spring

March–May: Best season for most trails — wildflowers, green landscapes, pleasant temperatures (12–22°C). Pantalica orchids in April. Zingaro Reserve at its most lush.

☀️ Summer

June–August: Etna trails and high-altitude Madonie/Nebrodi routes are best; low-altitude coastal trails very hot — start before 8 AM. Stromboli night hikes are spectacular in warm calm conditions.

🍂 Fall

September–November: Excellent conditions with cooling temperatures; Etna Valle del Bove in autumn colours; mushroom season in Madonie and Nebrodi forests.

❄️ Winter

December–February: Etna above 1,500m may have snow (skiing available); Madonie also snowy; coastal and lower trails accessible but some may be muddy.
