Top Hiking Trails

The best hikes Andalusia has to offer.

Caminito del Rey

Easy-Moderate
📏 7.7km (one-way)⏱️ 3-4 hours

Spain's most dramatic walkway — a restored path pinned to vertical limestone gorge walls above the Guadalhorce river. Originally built for hydroelectric workers in 1905, restored and reopened in 2015. Combines old sections of the original crumbling path with new pinned walkways, suspension bridges, and tunnel sections.

Highlights: Suspension bridges over the gorge, Vertical cliff face sections, Tunnel sections, Gaitanejo gorge views, Embalse del Chorro lake views

Mulhacén Summit

Strenuous
📏 22km (round trip from Hoya del Portillo)⏱️ 8-10 hours

Mulhacén is the highest mountain in the Iberian Peninsula (3,479m) and Spain's highest peak. The summit offers extraordinary panoramic views encompassing the Sierra Nevada, Granada, the Mediterranean, and on clear days, the mountains of Morocco. A serious mountain undertaking requiring preparation.

Highlights: Summit views to Morocco on clear days, Alpine landscape with snow (Jun-Jul), Ibex sightings common, High-altitude Mediterranean plants, Glacial lakes (lagunas)

Los Cahorros de Monachil

Moderate
📏 9km (circular)⏱️ 3-4 hours

A spectacular gorge walk from the village of Monachil into the Sierra Nevada foothills, featuring narrow canyon passages, hanging bridges (puentes colgantes) swaying over the Monachil river gorge, and dramatic limestone scenery. One of Andalusia's best family-friendly adventure hikes.

Highlights: Hanging bridges over the gorge, Narrow canyon passages (tight sections for shoulders), Wild swimming pools in the river, Sierra Nevada views, Picturesque Monachil village

El Torcal de Antequera — Yellow Route

Moderate
📏 4.5km (circular)⏱️ 2-3 hours

The longer of El Torcal's two marked routes through one of Europe's most dramatic karst limestone landscapes. Unusual rock formations sculpted over millions of years into towers, needles, mushrooms, and labyrinths provide extraordinary photography. The landscape feels otherworldly — like another planet.

Highlights: La Tornillo (corkscrew rock formation), El Champiñón (mushroom rock), Griffon vulture watching (thermal soaring), Panoramic views to Antequera and coast, Ancient marine fossils in limestone

Cabo de Gata Coastal Trail (San José to La Isleta del Moro)

Moderate
📏 12km (one-way) or sections⏱️ 4-5 hours one-way

A coastal trail through one of Europe's most pristine volcanic coastlines, passing remote cove beaches (Playa de los Genoveses, Playa de Mónsul) accessible only on foot. The dramatic volcanic cliffs, crystal Mediterranean water, and complete absence of development make this one of Andalusia's most spectacular walks.

Moderate-Strenuous
📏 180km (full route, multi-day)⏱️ 7-10 days (full route) or individual sections

A marked GR trail linking Andalusia's most picturesque white villages through the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park — one of the wettest areas in Spain and home to the Spanish fir (pinsapo), a prehistoric tree. Villages include Grazalema, Zahara de la Sierra, Olvera, Setenil de las Bodegas, and Arcos de la Frontera.

Highlights: Grazalema village and pinsapo fir forests, Zahara de la Sierra lake and castle, Setenil de las Bodegas (houses under rocks), Olvera hilltop castle, Pinsapar forest in spring (permit required)

Borosa River Trail (Sierra de Cazorla)

Moderate
📏 21km (round trip to Valdeazores lake)⏱️ 6-7 hours

The most popular trail in Spain's largest protected natural area. The route follows the Borosa river through a spectacular gorge, passing the Nacimiento del Aguas Negras spring, through two long tunnels (torch required), to emerge at the high-altitude Valdeazores and Aguas Negras lakes — stunning in all seasons.
