Top Hiking Trails
The best hikes South Aegean has to offer.
Santorini Caldera Trail (Fira to Oia)
moderateThe most iconic hike in the South Aegean, following the edge of Santorini's spectacular caldera from the capital Fira through Firostefani and Imerovigli to the clifftop village of Oia. The path offers continuous breathtaking views over the submerged volcanic caldera and the blue-domed churches of successive villages.
Rhodes Butterfly Valley Walk
easyA shaded woodland walk through the Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes), following a stream past wooden bridges and waterfalls through a forested valley that fills with thousands of jersey tiger moths from July to September.
Naxos Mountain Village Trail (Apeiranthos to Filoti)
moderateA spectacular walk through Naxos' mountainous interior, connecting the marble-paved village of Apeiranthos (famous for its scholars and distinctive Cretan-Mycenaean culture) with the picturesque village of Filoti at the foot of Mount Zas, Greece's highest Cycladic peak.
Mount Zas Summit, Naxos
moderateAscent of Mount Zeus (Zas), the highest mountain in the Cyclades at 1001m, from the village of Filoti. According to myth, Zeus was born in a cave on the mountain's flank. The summit offers extraordinary 360° views across dozens of Cycladic islands on clear days.
Lindos to Stegna Coastal Walk, Rhodes
moderateA beautiful coastal walk on Rhodes' eastern coast, from the village of Lindos north along clifftops and beaches to the fishing village of Stegna. The path crosses several beautiful coves with clear swimming water and offers continuous views of the Turkish coast.
Folegandros Church Walk
easyA walk from Folegandros Chora up a dramatic rocky path to the hilltop Church of Panagia (Our Lady), offering the most spectacular views of the clifftop village, the sea, and neighboring Cycladic islands. The church is also accessible by donkey on feast days.
Patmos Monastery to Grikos Walk
easyA peaceful walk from the Byzantine Monastery of Saint John at the hilltop of Patmos Chora, descending past olive groves and windmills to the tranquil bay of Grikos on the island's east coast. The views over the sacred island are exceptional.
Symi Kali Strata to Chorio
moderateThe famous 375-step stone staircase connecting Symi's magnificent harbor (Gialos) to the hilltop old village (Chorio). The steps are original Ottoman cobblestones, lined with beautiful old mansions. The views over the colorful harbor mansions from above are extraordinary.
Ancient Kamiros Walk, Rhodes
easyExploration of the extensive but partially excavated ruins of Ancient Kamiros, one of the three ancient cities of Rhodes. The site spreads over a hill above the sea with remarkably well-preserved remains of streets, houses, baths, and temples. Fewer visitors than Lindos.
Milos Village Loop

❄️ Winter
December-February: Some high trails can be wet and slippery. Lower coastal walks remain pleasant on most days.
