When to hike
Seasonal conditions in Democratic Republic Of The Congo.
- Spring
- March to May is the long rainy season - trails become muddy and slippery, particularly on volcanic slopes. Gorilla trekking still operates but conditions challenging. Virunga's forest is spectacularly lush and green.
- Summer
- June to September is the main dry season and prime hiking time. Trails are drier, views clearer, and mountain conditions most favorable. Best season for Nyiragongo summit and gorilla trekking.
- Fall
- October to November is the short rainy season. Hiking still possible but expect afternoon downpours. October is transitional with relatively good conditions early in the month.
- Winter
- December to February is a shorter dry season with good hiking conditions. Less crowded than June-September. Nyiragongo can be trekked but cloud cover may obscure summit views.
