Top Hiking Trails
The best hikes Sri Lanka has to offer.
Adam's Peak (Sri Pada)
challengingSri Lanka's most sacred mountain, revered by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians who believe the summit footprint belongs to Buddha, Shiva, Adam, and St. Thomas respectively. The pilgrimage climb is made overnight to witness sunrise from the top.
Ella Rock
moderateOne of Sri Lanka's most rewarding day hikes with a clear trail through tea plantations and forest to panoramic summit views over the Ella Gap, Nine Arch Bridge, and surrounding mountains. The path begins along the railway tracks from Ella station.
Horton Plains & World's End
easyA UNESCO World Heritage Site hike across a misty plateau to the dramatic World's End cliff with its 870-metre sheer drop into the lowlands. The trail passes Baker's Falls waterfall and open grasslands home to endemic sambar deer.
Knuckles Mountain Range
challengingA UNESCO World Heritage wilderness east of Kandy with spectacular cloud forests, waterfalls, and traditional villages. The Knuckles resemble a clenched fist from afar. Multiple trails range from half-day walks to challenging multi-day treks requiring camping.
Sinharaja Forest Reserve
moderateSri Lanka's last viable area of primary tropical rainforest, walking guided trails through dense biodiversity where endemic birds flock in mixed-species feeding waves. A guided walk is mandatory and reveals extraordinary wildlife invisible to untrained eyes.
Pidurangala Rock
moderateA steep but short climb to a rock summit offering the most spectacular view of Sigiriya Rock Fortress across the valley. Far cheaper than Sigiriya entry and offering a superior photographic perspective, especially at sunrise.
Little Adam's Peak, Ella
easyA short, accessible hike through tea plantations to a peak with stunning panoramic views across the Ella valley. Much easier than Adam's Peak but equally rewarding for scenery. Popular at sunrise and suitable for families and beginners.
Mulgirigala Rock Temple
easyA lesser-known alternative to Dambulla featuring a series of cave temples with ancient Buddhist murals ascending a dramatic standalone rock. Far fewer tourists make this a peaceful spiritual hike with excellent southern lowland views.
