Luxor is an open-air museum stretching along the Nile in Upper Egypt, home to the greatest concentration of ancient monuments on Earth. Once the ancient capital of Thebes, it remains one of the world's most extraordinary archaeological destinations.
Top Hiking Trails
The best hikes Luxor has to offer.
Theban Hills Summit Trail
moderateThe climb from the Valley of the Kings parking area up and over the Theban Hills plateau gives extraordinary panoramic views of the Valley of the Kings below and, from the summit, the entire Nile Valley stretching north and south. This is the path the ancient priests and workers used to commute to work.
Valley of the Queens to Valley of the Kings Plateau Walk
moderateA cross-plateau walk connecting the two royal necropolises through the high desert of the Theban Hills. The route follows ancient paths with virtually no modern infrastructure, passing dramatic rock formations and offering complete solitude. Best done with a guide.
West Bank Village Walk — Gurna Circuit
easyA flat walk through the agricultural villages and lanes of the West Bank, passing village life, irrigation channels, and the hillside where tombs of the nobles dot the rock face. An excellent way to experience daily life between temple visits.
East Bank — Karnak to Luxor Temple Avenue Walk
easyWalking the newly restored Avenue of Sphinxes processional road from Luxor Temple to Karnak Temple is a compelling ancient walking route. At dusk, with both temples illuminated, it becomes magical.
Deir el-Bahari Amphitheatre Walk
easyA short climb from Hatshepsut's Temple up the side of the natural limestone amphitheatre to a viewpoint directly above the temple. The view down into the terraced temple with the desert cliffs behind is spectacular.
Northern Tombs and Banana Island Circuit
easyA pleasant Nile-side walk north from Karnak Temple along the east bank through local villages, cultivation, and Nile-edge paths to the ferry landing for Banana Island. A complete contrast to the temple-focused visitor experience.
Medinet Habu to Valley of the Queens Desert Path
easyA desert track connecting two of the West Bank's most undervisited sites, passing through open desert landscape with views of Medinet Habu and the distant Karnak pylons across the fields. Best walked in the early morning.
Luxor Corniche Evening Promenade
easyThe palm-lined Corniche from Luxor Temple to the Luxor Museum is the city's finest evening walk. The illuminated Luxor Temple, gliding feluccas, and views across to the West Bank mountains create an unmissable atmosphere.
