Western Cape is South Africa's most visited province, home to the iconic Table Mountain, world-renowned Cape Winelands, the spectacular Garden Route, and the vibrant city of Cape Town. It offers a unique Mediterranean climate, diverse landscapes ranging from dramatic coastlines to semi-desert Karoo, and a rich cultural tapestry blending Cape Malay, Khoikhoi, Dutch, and British heritage.
Top Hiking Trails
The best hikes Western Cape has to offer.
Table Mountain via Platteklip Gorge
moderateThe most popular hiking route up Table Mountain follows a well-defined path up the Platteklip Gorge to the summit plateau. The hike is challenging but manageable for most fit adults, with spectacular views of Cape Town, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Cape Peninsula. The cable car can be taken down for those who prefer.
Lion's Head Circuit
moderateThe iconic circular route around and up Lion's Head peak involves two sections of chains and ladders (with an easier alternative bypass route). The 360° views from the summit encompass Table Mountain, the Atlantic coastline, the City Bowl, and Robben Island. The full moon hike is a beloved Cape Town tradition.
Cape Point to Dias Beach
easyA beautiful coastal walk from the Cape Point parking area down to the remote and dramatic Dias Beach. The path descends through coastal fynbos with extraordinary sea views and the chance to spot baboons, ostriches, and bontebok. The beach itself is wild and spectacular.
Otter Trail Section 1
moderateSouth Africa's most famous multi-day hiking trail follows the rugged Tsitsikamma coastline for 42km over 5 days. The trail passes through ancient yellowwood forests, crosses rivers by wading, and overnight in basic huts. Bookings open exactly a year in advance and typically sell out within hours.
Hoerikwaggo Trail - Cape of Good Hope Section
moderateThis multi-day trail traverses the entire Cape Peninsula from Cape Point to Cape Town. Individual day sections can be hiked separately, including this spectacular south section through the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve with views of both Atlantic and False Bay.
Bosmanskloof Trail (Greyton to McGregor)
moderateOne of the Western Cape's most rewarding day hikes connects the whitewashed village of Greyton to the equally charming McGregor through the Riviersonderend Mountains. The trail passes through stunning mountain fynbos with swimming pools in the river, requiring a car shuttle or overnight stay.
Whale Trail, De Hoop Nature Reserve
moderateOne of South Africa's premier multi-day hiking experiences traverses the remote De Hoop Nature Reserve along its spectacular limestone coast. Hikers stay in beautifully restored cottages overnight. From June to November, Southern Right Whales are abundant in the Marine Protected Area below.
Wolfberg Arch & Cracks, Cederberg
hardA challenging but magnificent hike in the Cederberg Wilderness reaches both the dramatic Wolfberg Cracks (a narrow slot canyon) and the extraordinary Wolfberg Arch, a massive natural sandstone bridge. The Cederberg landscape of orange sandstone formations and fynbos is otherworldly.
Chapman's Peak Walk
easyWalking sections of the iconic Chapman's Peak on foot rather than driving gives an entirely different perspective on the dramatic clifftop scenery. The route from the Hout Bay side to Silvermine viewpoints combines spectacular Atlantic views with fynbos flowers and seabird watching.
Stellenbosch Panorama Trail
hardA strenuous but incredibly rewarding full-day hike from Stellenbosch into the Hottentots Holland Mountains with breathtaking views over False Bay, the Winelands, and as far as Franschhoek. The high plateaus are covered in remarkable Cape Floral Kingdom biodiversity.

Local Hazards
- Puff adders are present in fynbos and grasslands - watch where you step and don't put hands or feet under rocks
- Sun exposure is intense at altitude - apply SPF50+ and wear a hat even on cloudy days
- Mountain weather changes rapidly - always carry a windproof layer regardless of forecast
- Baboons on the Cape Peninsula can be aggressive especially if approached or if you have visible food
- Table Mountain and Cape Point can be closed when the Cape Doctor wind is dangerously strong
- Never hike alone in remote areas - Wolfberg, Otter Trail, and Cederberg require a partner or group
- Bring 2-3 litres of water per person per day - dehydration is a risk year-round
- Flash flooding in mountain stream crossings possible during winter rain - check weather forecasts
