🟢 Easy

Flat or gently undulating terrain suitable for families and beginners. Most Lithuanian national park trails fall in this category due to the relatively flat landscape.

🟡 Moderate

Some elevation gain or longer distances. Kernave hill forts and Žemaitija lake trails fall here — good fitness recommended but no technical skills needed.

🟠 Challenging

Longer distances or rougher terrain. Multi-day forest routes in Dzūkija or Aukštaitija national parks. Proper footwear and navigation skills recommended.

🔴 Expert

Not applicable in Lithuania — there are no alpine or technical mountain trails. The country's highest point (Aukštojas Hill, 294m) is accessible as an easy walk.

Local Hazards

  • Ticks carrying Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis are common in Lithuanian forests spring through autumn — wear long sleeves, use repellent, and check for ticks after walks. TBE vaccination recommended for active hikers.
  • Mosquitoes near lakes and wetlands can be aggressive in June and July — repellent is essential near Aukštaitija National Park lakes
  • Mushroom picking: dozens of poisonous species grow in Lithuanian forests — only pick mushrooms you can identify with certainty or with a knowledgeable local guide
  • Weather changes quickly, particularly on the Curonian Spit — strong Baltic winds and sudden rain are common. Pack a waterproof layer.
  • Hunting season (October-January) is active in Lithuanian state forests — stay on marked trails and wear bright colors

Best Time to Hike

🌸 Spring

March to May brings blooming wildflowers and birdsong to Lithuanian forests. Trails can be muddy after snowmelt, particularly in March. Excellent for birdwatching during migration.

☀️ Summer

June to August is peak hiking season with long days (up to 17 hours of daylight in June). Forests are lush, lakes are swimmable. Mosquitoes and ticks are active — bring repellent.

🍂 Fall

September and October are the best months for hiking. Spectacular autumn foliage, cooler temperatures, and the famous mushroom and berry season make forests irresistible.

❄️ Winter

November to February: snow transforms Lithuania's forests into a peaceful winter wonderland. Some trails may be icy. Cross-country skiing possible in Aukštaitija and Dzūkija national parks.
