Nightlife guides for cities and regions

How evenings unfold in different places, from districts and opening hours to the practicalities of getting home.

Timing is the first thing to adjust. In parts of southern Europe and Latin America dinner begins when other countries are closing their kitchens, and venues fill hours later still; elsewhere last orders arrive early and the evening is compressed into a shorter window. Reading the local rhythm before the first night out saves the familiar experience of arriving somewhere excellent while it is still empty, or hungry after service has ended.

Cities tend to separate their evenings by district: a street of neighbourhood bars, a quarter given over to live music, a cluster of late clubs somewhere less residential. Entry policies vary just as widely, taking in dress codes, membership formalities, admission charges and cash-only doors. Licensing rules also shape what is possible, from noise curfews in residential areas to restrictions on outdoor tables after a certain hour.

Plan the journey home before you set out. Metro and tram systems often stop earlier than the venues they serve, night buses can run on routes unrelated to the daytime network, and surge pricing tends to peak exactly when everyone leaves. Keep a card and a little cash separately, agree a meeting point with anyone you are travelling with, and check whether tabs are settled at the bar or at the end.
