Baja California is Mexico's northwesternmost state, a 1,300 km-long borderland running from the busiest land border crossing on earth at Tijuana down the Pacific coast to the cactus deserts of the Valle de los Cirios. It packs a world-class wine valley, Baja Med cuisine, Pacific surf beaches, a 3,000 m granite sierra and the warm Sea of Cortez into a single drive-friendly state.
Tijuana has the most interesting nightlife in northwest Mexico, spread between the rooftops and mezcalerias of Avenida Revolucion, the brewpubs that made the city a craft-beer capital, and the late-night taco alley that catches everyone on the way home. Ensenada's scene is smaller and rowdier, anchored by Hussong's Cantina, which opened in 1892 and claims the invention of the margarita. Rosarito runs on weekend crowds from California, and the Valle de Guadalupe is not a nightlife destination at all: dinner ends late, wine bars close by 11PM and the roads are dark and unlit.
Nights start late by US standards. Bars fill after 10PM, clubs after midnight, and the taco stands are busiest between 1AM and 3AM. Craft beer is the local specialty, valley wine is on almost every list, and mezcal has replaced tequila as the drink of choice in Tijuana's newer bars.
