Aydın is a province and city in Turkey's Aegean region, nestled in the fertile Büyük Menderes (Meander) River valley. The city of Aydın — sometimes called the 'fig capital of the world' — sits amid orchards producing the globally prized Söke and Çakıllı dried figs, alongside olives and cotton. The province is an extraordinary concentration of ancient Greek and Roman cities: Aphrodisias (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Priene, Miletus, Didyma, Magnesia on the Meander, Alabanda, Nysa, and the ancient ruins of Tralleis within the modern city itself. The Aegean coast fringes the western edge of the province, with Kuşadası offering beach resort life and ferry access to Samos, and Didim housing the monumental Temple of Apollo at Didyma.
