Its capital, Hermosillo, sits at the base of Cerro de la Campana, while the coast delivers the resort towns of San Carlos and Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point), the historic port of Guaymas, and the UNESCO-listed volcanic dunes of El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar. Inland, the restored silver-mining Pueblo Mágico of Álamos preserves one of Mexico's best-kept colonial cores, far from the standard tourist circuit.

Sonora's nightlife splits clearly between Hermosillo's more local, craft-beer-and-cantina scene along the Blvd. Luis Encinas corridor and the cross-border party atmosphere of Puerto Peñasco, where Arizona weekend visitors fuel a livelier, more tourist-driven strip of beach bars and clubs along the Old Port malecón. San Carlos offers a quieter, sunset-lounge alternative geared toward sport-fishing tourists and retirees rather than late-night clubbing. Weekend nights (Thursday-Saturday in Hermosillo, Friday-Sunday and US holiday weekends in Puerto Peñasco) bring the biggest crowds.

A contrast between Hermosillo's growing craft-beer and cantina culture, centered on the university district, and Puerto Peñasco's beach-party atmosphere built around US day-trippers and long-weekend visitors.
