Guangzhou is the sprawling capital of Guangdong Province and the historic heart of Cantonese culture, sitting on the Pearl River in southern China. For more than 2,000 years it has been one of China's great trading ports — the starting point of the ancient Maritime Silk Road and, in later centuries, the only Chinese port legally open to Western trade. Today it is a hypermodern megacity of glass towers along the Pearl River, wrapped around an old town of Lingnan-style ancestral halls, colonial-era Shamian Island, and some of the best Cantonese food anywhere on earth, from dim sum teahouses to street stalls serving wonton noodles and roast goose.
Guangzhou's nightlife is spread across three very different zones. Party Pier, a former Pearl River brewery on Yuejiang Xi Road in Haizhu District, is the city's most concentrated strip of bars, clubs, and riverside terraces with Canton Tower views. Xingsheng Road in Zhujiang New Town (Tianhe District) is a foreigner-friendly bar street built around expat pubs and late-night eateries near the Liede metro stop. High above both, the rooftop bars inside Tianhe's five-star towers -- Rosewood, K11, and the surrounding financial-district hotels -- serve cocktails against a skyline that includes Canton Tower and the Pearl River. Local nightlife tends to start later than in Western cities, with most bars filling up after 9:00 PM and clubs peaking well past midnight.
