Shenzhen is a sprawling megacity on China's southern coast, directly across the border from Hong Kong. Shenzhen's nightlife splits into distinct scenes rather than one central strip: Shekou's Sea World Plaza is the expat living room built around a decommissioned cruise ship, Futian's Coco Park is the mainstream bar-and-club street with over twenty venues packed into a few blocks, and OCT-LOFT in Nanshan trades dance floors for live music and art-space gigs. Prices run lower than Hong Kong just across the border, but nightlife here still winds down earlier than in Western cities, with most bars and metro service both easing off after 1-2am.
The city's after-dark scene is young, mixed local-and-expat, and centered on beer gardens, karaoke (KTV), craft cocktail bars, and a handful of proper nightclubs, with almost no red-light strip culture of the kind found in some other Asian cities. Shekou skews expat and relaxed; Coco Park skews younger, louder, and more club-oriented; OCT-LOFT skews artsy with live jazz and indie acts; Nanshan's tech district has a smaller, quieter after-work bar circuit near the Shenzhen Bay office parks.
