Gifu Prefecture occupies the heart of Honshu, stretching from the UNESCO-listed thatched villages of Shirakawa-go through the Hida mountain range to the cormorant-fishing rivers of Gifu City. It is one of Japan's most scenically diverse prefectures, blending ancient traditions with dramatic alpine landscapes.
Gifu's evening culture is centred on izakaya dining, sake culture, and traditional entertainment rather than nightclubs. Gifu City's Yanagase entertainment district is the liveliest strip, while Takayama offers intimate sake bars in converted Edo-period kura (storehouses). The highlight of any evening in Gifu City from May to October is the Nagara River ukai cormorant fishing — a 1,300-year-old tradition that takes place after dark by torchlight.
Gifu's nightlife is quintessentially Japanese: warm, convivial, and anchored in food and drink rather than dancing. Izakayas dominate — multi-hour drinking-and-dining sessions with friends over beer, sake, and endless small plates. Gifu City's Yanagase district concentrates bars, karaoke parlours, and izakayas within a few walkable blocks. Takayama's Old Town has a handful of intimate sake bars. The entire prefecture observes an informal evening quietening after 23:00.

Yanagase Entertainment District
The main evening strip in Gifu City, running approximately 500m along Yanagase-dori. Contains dozens of izakayas, karaoke venues, ramen shops, and small bars. Lively from 18:00 to midnight.
