Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province in southwestern China, a city of over 20 million people famous as the global home of giant panda conservation, the birthplace of fiery Sichuanese cuisine and mala hotpot, and a relaxed teahouse culture that stands in contrast to China's faster-paced coastal metropolises. Landmarks range from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding to the historic Kuanzhai Alleys and Jinli Ancient Street beside the Wuhou Shrine.

Chengdu's evenings split between two very different traditions: the fast-growing bar and club scene of Jiuyanqiao, Yulin, and Lan Kwai Fong, and the older, slower ritual of the teahouse and Sichuan opera performance. A single night out can move from a spicy hotpot dinner to a craft beer bar to a nightclub with international DJs, or just as easily end with tea and a face-changing show. The scene is younger and more international in Yulin and Jiuyanqiao, more polished and upscale at Lan Kwai Fong and the rooftop bars near Chunxi Road.

Live-music dive bars and craft beer taprooms dominate Yulin and Jiuyanqiao, catering to a mixed local, student, and expat crowd. Lan Kwai Fong Chengdu, modeled on the Hong Kong original, is a purpose-built entertainment complex of large clubs and cocktail lounges aimed at a wealthier, more international audience. Hip-hop and electronic clubs such as NASA and TAG cluster around the Poly Center and Donghu Park. Rooftop cocktail bars near Chunxi Road and Jinjiang District cater to a slower-paced, skyline-view evening.
