Getting around: transport guides by destination

How to move between and within destinations, covering networks, ticketing systems and the choices that matter.

For journeys between places, the sensible comparison is door to door rather than seat to seat. A train from a city centre often beats a short flight once airport transfers, check-in and baggage are counted, while long distances or awkward connections tilt the other way. Advance fares on many rail networks are considerably cheaper than walk-up prices and sell in limited quantities, and some services require a seat reservation even when a pass covers the fare.

Local networks differ mainly in how they are paid for. Some cities use contactless bank cards with automatic daily caps, others sell paper tickets that must be validated before boarding, and others again run zone systems where the wrong ticket counts as no ticket. Day and multi-day passes suit dense sightseeing but rarely pay for themselves on quieter days. Where taxis are common, establish whether fares are metered, fixed by route, or agreed in advance.

Driving brings its own paperwork. Licence recognition, permit requirements, minimum ages, tolls, urban access and low-emission zones, and the size of the insurance excess all vary, and city parking is frequently the real constraint. Whatever the mode, build slack into connections: strikes, engineering works and weather disruption are ordinary events, and a tight transfer is the first thing to fail.
