Getting Around North Aegean 2026

From airport to backstreets: the full transport picture for North Aegean, with current fares.

The North Aegean is Greece's most authentically Greek island region, a scattered archipelago of forested mountains, medieval stone villages, Byzantine monasteries, and crystalline bays stretching along Turkey's western coast. Lesbos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria, and Lemnos each carry distinct identities shaped by centuries of Greek, Byzantine, Ottoman, and ancient civilisation.

The North Aegean islands are reached from Athens by domestic flights (45–55 minutes) or overnight ferries from Piraeus (8–14 hours). Within each island, rental cars and scooters are the most practical options — public buses cover only the main routes. Inter-island travel requires advance planning as not all islands have direct connections.

Transport tips

Travel smarter, not harder.

Tip

Book ferry tickets at least 2 weeks ahead in July–August — peak routes sell out.

Tip

Overnight ferries from Piraeus are comfortable with cabins; book a cabin for €20–40 extra over deck class.

Tip

Carry ferry and flight bookings printed — connectivity on smaller islands can be poor.

Tip

Petrol stations exist in main towns but are rare in remote areas — fill up before heading into the mountains.

Tip

Motorcycle helmets are legally required; rental shops must provide them.

Tip

The meltemi wind can close ferry routes for 1–2 days in July–August — build flexibility into inter-island plans.
