Bolu is a mid-sized city in the forested mountains of northwestern Turkey, positioned on the historic Istanbul–Ankara corridor. Surrounded by dense forests, mountain lakes, and the Köroğlu range, it is nationally celebrated as Turkey's culinary heartland — chefs from the nearby Mengen district staffed Ottoman palace kitchens for centuries. Today visitors come for Yedigöller National Park, Abant Lake, Kartalkaya ski resort, and the well-preserved Ottoman towns of Mudurnu and Göynük.
Bolu has no airport. The city sits on the E80 motorway (TEM) corridor between Istanbul and Ankara, making intercity bus the primary way to arrive. Intercity coaches drop passengers at Bolu otogar (bus station), located 3 km west of the city centre. Within the province, dolmuş minibuses serve Abant Lake and Gölcük regularly, but a rental car is almost essential for reaching Yedigöller National Park (42 km), Kartalkaya ski resort (45 km), Mudurnu (50 km), and Göynük (60 km). The city centre is compact and walkable; taxis cover short local trips.
