Getting Around Chad 2026

How Chad moves: the transit systems, intercity routes, and fares that shape your trip.

Chad is a vast landlocked country in Central Africa offering some of Africa's most remote and spectacular landscapes. From the wildlife-rich Zakouma National Park to the otherworldly rock formations of the UNESCO-listed Ennedi Massif, Chad rewards adventurous travelers with authentic experiences far from tourist crowds.

Public
Very limited public transport. N'Djamena has an irregular minibus network (200-500 XAF per trip) but routes are confusing and vehicles crowded. Outside the capital, public transport is minimal — bush taxis and shared minibuses on main routes only.
Taxi
Shared taxis are the main urban transport option in N'Djamena, abundant and cheap (500-2,000 XAF per trip). Private taxi hire by the hour (5,000-10,000 XAF) or day (60,000-80,000 XAF) recommended for visitors. Negotiate price before departure.
Rental
Self-drive car rental not recommended in Chad due to poor road conditions, security concerns, and lack of roadside assistance. 4x4 vehicle with driver is the standard for any travel outside N'Djamena — essential for reaching Zakouma, Ennedi, or Lake Chad.
Walking
Central N'Djamena (around Avenue Charles de Gaulle and the diplomatic quarter) is walkable in cooler morning and evening hours. Midday heat (40°C+) makes extended walking dangerous. Walking outside familiar areas at night is not recommended.

Transport tips

Travel smarter, not harder.

Tip

Always negotiate taxi fares BEFORE entering the vehicle — there are no meters and fares are set by negotiation

Tip

For day trips outside N'Djamena, hire a 4x4 with driver for the full day (60,000-100,000 XAF / $108-180) — individual trips cost more and logistics become complicated

Tip

Carry your passport and travel documents at all times — police checkpoints are frequent throughout Chad and document checks are routine

Tip

Book charter flights to Zakouma at least 4-6 weeks in advance — seats fill quickly during peak safari season (January-April)

Tip

Roads outside N'Djamena and major towns are unpaved and often impassable during rainy season (June-September) — all travel planning must account for seasonal road conditions
