Getting Around Namibia 2026

How Namibia moves: the transit systems, intercity routes, and fares that shape your trip.

Namibia offers otherworldly landscapes from the towering red dunes of Sossusvlei to the wildlife-rich plains of Etosha National Park. This sparsely populated country combines dramatic desert scenery, colonial German heritage, and authentic African safaris for an unforgettable adventure.

Public
Public transport is very limited in Namibia — informal minibus taxis serve routes in Windhoek and between major towns but are unreliable and uncomfortable for tourists carrying luggage
Taxi
Taxis available in Windhoek and Swakopmund but no apps — must negotiate price upfront or use hotel-arranged services. No Uber or Bolt.
Rental
Self-drive car rental is by far the best way to explore Namibia — a 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle is essential for accessing national parks and most attractions on gravel roads
Walking
Windhoek city center and Swakopmund town are walkable in daylight; suburbs require transport. Rural areas and national parks require vehicle transport at all times.

Bus

Bus

Limited public bus service in Windhoek and major towns. Informal minibus taxis connect townships to city centers for N$10-15 ($0.60-$0.90). Intercape and other coaches connect major cities but routes and schedules limited. Not recommended for tourists due to unreliability.

Alternatives

Alternatives

metro, taxi, rideshare

Taxis & rideshare

What to expect from taxis and apps.

Regular
Metered taxis rare. Negotiate fare before departure. Windhoek city rides N$50-100 ($3-6). Airport taxis more expensive. Use reputable companies or hotel-arranged taxis. Uber not available. WhatsApp-based ride services emerging in Windhoek.

Intercity travel

Getting between cities and regions.

Bus

Bus

Intercape Mainliner operates coach services between major cities (Windhoek-Swakopmund, Windhoek-Walvis Bay). Comfortable, air-conditioned, relatively punctual. Book online or at terminals. Combis (minibus taxis) connect towns but less comfortable and safe for tourists.

Flights

Flights

Air Namibia ceased operations (2021). FlyNamibia and Westair Aviation offer limited domestic flights connecting Windhoek to coastal towns and northern regions. Expensive but time-saving for remote destinations like Skeleton Coast.

App

MTC MobiMoney

Transport tips

Travel smarter, not harder.

Tip

A 4x4 rental is strongly recommended — even 'passable' gravel roads require good ground clearance, and many lodges specifically require 4x4 for access

Tip

Always fuel up at every fuel station you pass in remote areas — the next one may be 200 km away and fuel availability is not guaranteed

Tip

Download Tracks4Africa GPS offline maps app before traveling — Google Maps fails in remote areas and the T4A database includes all Namibian roads including C and D gravel tracks

Tip

Pre-book rental cars at least 6-8 weeks ahead for peak season (May-October) — availability drops sharply and prices rise

Tip

Intercape Mainliner bus (booking online) is the safest and most reliable bus service for Windhoek to Swakopmund/Walvis Bay intercity travel

Tip

For Windhoek city travel, arrange taxis through your hotel rather than hailing on the street — hotel-arranged taxis are safer and the price is pre-agreed
