Baja California is Mexico's northwesternmost state, a 1,300 km-long borderland running from the busiest land border crossing on earth at Tijuana down the Pacific coast to the cactus deserts of the Valle de los Cirios. It packs a world-class wine valley, Baja Med cuisine, Pacific surf beaches, a 3,000 m granite sierra and the warm Sea of Cortez into a single drive-friendly state.

- ABC is the dominant intercity bus company, linking Tijuana, Tecate, Mexicali, Ensenada, San Felipe and San Quintin from the Central de Autobuses in each city. Tijuana-Ensenada runs roughly hourly from about 5AM to 10PM for around MXN 300 (approx USD 18).
- Taxi
- Uber and DiDi quote in the app and avoid the fare negotiation that street taxis expect. A cross-town Tijuana ride is MXN 90-180 (approx USD 5-11). Taxis libres are metered in theory and negotiated in practice; agree the fare before getting in.
- Rental
- Car hire is available at Tijuana Airport, in Zona Rio and in Ensenada from about MXN 700 (approx USD 41) per day. Mexican liability insurance is compulsory and is sold alongside the rental; most US-issued policies and credit-card cover are not valid in Mexico.
- Walking
- The San Ysidro pedestrian crossing puts visitors 15 minutes' walk from Avenida Revolucion, which is the one part of Tijuana best explored on foot. Ensenada's malecon, Lopez Mateos and the fish market form a compact walkable core.

Baja California is a long, thin state, and transport decisions follow from that. For a trip confined to Tijuana, a rental car is a liability: parking is difficult and rideshare is cheap. For anything involving the Valle de Guadalupe, the sierra or the Gulf coast, a car is close to essential, with ABC buses as the fallback between the main towns. Everything hinges on the border: crossing south is quick, crossing north can take hours.

Northbound border queues are the biggest time cost of any Baja trip; crossing back into the US at San Ysidro can take three hours on a Sunday afternoon and 20 minutes at 6AM on a Tuesday.
Frequent crossers should enrol in SENTRI (USD 120 for a five-year membership, plus an in-person interview); the SENTRI lane at San Ysidro and Otay Mesa averages 15-30 minutes against 1-3 hours in the general lane. Ready Lane needs no enrollment, only a passport card, Border Crossing Card or other RFID-enabled document, and is nearly as fast.
The Otay Mesa and Tecate crossings are usually far quicker than San Ysidro, and Tecate closes overnight, so check hours before planning a late return.
Buy Mexican liability insurance online before crossing, or at the drive-through kiosks on the US side at San Ysidro and Otay; a policy costs MXN 250-500 (approx USD 15-30) per day.
Use the 1D toll road, not the libre, between Tijuana and Ensenada. Tolls total about MXN 120 (approx USD 7) and the free road is slower and rougher.
Petrol is sold by attendants; state the peso amount, confirm the pump reads zero before fuelling, pay in pesos and tip about MXN 10 (approx USD 0.60).
Avoid driving intercity after dark, especially south of Ensenada, where livestock, unlit vehicles and unmarked road works are common.
