Veracruz is a long, humid state on Mexico's Gulf Coast, stretching from the tropical port city of Veracruz to the cool highland capital of Xalapa and the volcanic slopes of Pico de Orizaba. It blends Spanish colonial history, Afro-Caribbean and son jarocho music culture, Totonac and Olmec archaeological heritage, coffee country around Coatepec and Xico, and one of Mexico's busiest working ports.
Veracruz state stretches nearly 700 km along the Gulf coast, so getting between its cities means either flying between the three main airports, riding the extensive ADO long-distance bus network, or driving. Within Veracruz port, Xalapa, and other cities, local buses (camiones urbanos) and taxis handle short trips cheaply; ride-hailing apps operate in the larger cities but coverage is thinner than in central Mexico. A rental car is the most flexible way to combine the coast, the coffee highlands around Xalapa, and inland archaeological sites like El Tajin in a single visit.

ADO (and its budget arm AU/OCC) is the dominant long-distance operator across Veracruz state - book online at ado.com.mx or through the ADO app for guaranteed seats on popular routes
Confirm whether an ADO service is 'directo' or makes stops; some Veracruz-Xalapa and Veracruz-Catemaco buses stop at several towns en route, adding 30-60 minutes
Local buses (camiones) in Veracruz port and Boca del Rio run frequently along Bulevar Avila Camacho and cost only MXN 10-12 (about USD 0.60-0.70), but have no posted schedule - just flag one down
Rideshare apps (Uber, DiDi) work well in Veracruz port, Boca del Rio, and Xalapa, but coverage drops off quickly in smaller towns like Papantla, Catemaco, or Coatepec, where sitio taxis are the norm
For El Tajin, flying or driving to Poza Rica is faster than the long coastal bus ride from Veracruz port, which can take 4-5 hours
