Road Conditions
Roads are generally good. The EN125 coastal highway can be congested in summer; use the A22 Algarve Via Infante motorway for faster east-west travel (toll-paying). Parking is challenging at popular beaches in July–August.
Driving Considerations
- Research local driving laws and road conditions before deciding to drive
- Consider hiring a driver instead - often affordable and less stressful
- Ensure comprehensive insurance if renting a vehicle
- Avoid driving at night in unfamiliar areas
- Keep copies of all documents (license, insurance, rental agreement)
Transportation Tips
Essential advice for getting around.
Book car rental 4–6 weeks ahead for July–August — vehicles sell out quickly at Faro Airport
The A22 Via Infante motorway runs the length of the Algarve with tolls — budget €5–€10 for a full east-west crossing
Parking at popular beaches (Marinha, Camilo, Dona Ana) is very limited in summer — arrive before 9AM or take a taxi
The CP Algarve train is cheaper and more scenic than the bus between Lagos, Portimão, Faro and Tavira
Bolt works well in Faro, Albufeira, Portimão and Lagos; less reliable in smaller towns
Cycling the flat Ecovia del Litoral coastal cycle route from Faro east to Vila Real de Santo António is excellent
Fuel is cheaper in Portugal than the UK and northern Europe; fill up in towns rather than motorway service stations
Useful Apps
Bolt
Best ride-hailing app in the Algarve; widely available in main towns
Uber
Also available in larger Algarve towns; slightly less coverage than Bolt
