Public Transit
Chengdu Metro is clean, modern, fast, and bilingual — the best way to get around the city. Bus routes are comprehensive but signage is Chinese-only.
Taxis
Use Didi exclusively — street-hailed taxis at tourist spots may not use meters. Download Didi before arrival and link a foreign card.
Car Rental
Car rental is not practical for foreign visitors without a Chinese license. Private car hire with an English-speaking driver ($80–180/day) is the best alternative for exploring western Sichuan.
Walking
Chengdu's city center around Chunxi Road, Tianfu Square, and the alley neighborhoods is very walkable and pedestrian-friendly.

✈️ By Air
Chengdu Tianfu International Airport
Opened in 2021 as Chengdu's new main international airport. The largest airport in western China with connections to 100+ cities worldwide including direct routes to Europe, North America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport
The original international airport still handling many domestic and international flights. Closer to central Chengdu and convenient for the southern business district.
Jiuhuang Airport (Jiuzhaigou/Huanglong)
A small high-altitude airport (3,450m) serving the northern Sichuan tourist area around Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong. Altitude sickness risk during transfer; road shuttle takes 1.5–2 hours from airport to park.
Kangding Airport
A high-altitude airport (4,290m) serving the gateway to western Sichuan's Garzê Prefecture. Flights from Chengdu take 40 minutes. Note the extreme altitude of the airport itself requires slow movement after landing.
Daocheng Yading Airport
The world's highest-altitude commercial airport at 4,411 meters, serving the Daocheng Yading Nature Reserve in southern Sichuan. Flights from Chengdu take 45 minutes. Altitude sickness is a serious concern upon landing.

Getting around within Sichuan.
Chengdu city is well served by metro, buses, and Didi. For attractions outside the city, high-speed trains reach Leshan and Emeishan, while buses are the main option for Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng. Western Sichuan requires bus or private car.

Getting between cities and regions.
High-speed rail connects Chengdu to Leshan, Emeishan, and Mianyang within Sichuan. Long-distance coaches serve Dujiangyan, Jiuzhaigou, Kangding, and most county seats. Western Sichuan highland routes are best done by private vehicle.

Long-distance coaches from $5 (Dujiangyan) to $45 (Jiuzhaigou, 9–10 hours); depart from Chengdu's Xinnanmen or Chadianzi bus stations

Shared vans/taxis serve highland routes in western Sichuan; arrange through local guesthouses
