- Public Motor Vehicles (PMVs) are privately-owned minibuses and trucks operating throughout PNG. While widely used by locals and cheap, they are NOT RECOMMENDED for tourists due to high crime risk, unpredictable schedules, overcrowding, and poor safety standards. Do not use PMVs.
- Taxi
- Pre-booked taxis through your hotel are the standard and safest way to get around. Base fare around 10-15 PGK plus 3-5 PGK/km. Expect 30-100 PGK for typical city trips. Never hail taxis on the street.
- Rental
- Car rental available from Avis, Budget, and Ela Motors at Jacksons Airport from $60-150/day. Requires international driving permit. NOT recommended for tourists due to carjacking risk, poor signage, and road conditions. 4WD essential outside Port Moresby.
- Walking
- Walking within secure hotel compounds, Vision City Mall, and the Ela Beach promenade during daylight hours is safe. Walking anywhere else in Port Moresby, especially after dark, carries real safety risk. In Madang walking near the waterfront in daylight is much more feasible.

PNG Air
Second domestic carrier serving key provincial destinations. Check their website for schedules to Goroka, Moro, and smaller airstrips not covered by Air Niugini.

Private drivers hired for the full day ($100-200 PGK) are the safest and most flexible option for exploring beyond your hotel
For domestic travel between towns, domestic flights are safer and often faster than road travel - Air Niugini and PNG Air cover most major destinations
Never travel on the Highlands Highway at night - road conditions and security risks make nighttime road travel between towns highly inadvisable
Download the PNG Taxi app before arrival but do not rely on it exclusively - hotel-arranged transport remains the most reliable option
Boat transport between coastal islands (Madang, Kavieng, Alotau) is available but check current safety and vessel quality with your accommodation before booking
