Getting Around Lesser Poland 2025
Navigate Lesser Poland like a local with our transportation guide.
Lesser Poland (Małopolska) is a historic voivodeship in southern Poland anchored by the royal city of Kraków, one of Europe's most beautiful medieval capitals. The region encompasses dramatic landscapes ranging from the Tatra Mountains and Pieniny range in the south to rolling Jurassic limestone uplands in the north, dotted with castles, salt mines, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. With more UNESCO-listed sites than any other Polish region, world-class cuisine, and a vibrant cultural scene, Lesser Poland is Poland's premier travel destination.

Bolt and Uber are the safest options - always cheaper and more reliable than street taxis. Typical Kraków rides are $5-10.
Car Rental
Useful for exploring the region beyond Kraków. All major rental companies at the airport (Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Budget). Parking in Kraków center is expensive and scarce.

Transportation Tips
Essential advice for getting around.
Buy a multi-ride tram/bus ticket for stays of 3+ days in Kraków - 24h ($4) or 72h ($9) passes are excellent value
Never take an unlicensed taxi from the street in Kraków - always use Bolt, Uber, or hotel-arranged taxis
The airport train is far faster than the bus - always worth the small extra cost
The Zakopane bus leaves from the main bus station behind Kraków's main railway station - buy tickets at the office or online
Wieliczka is easily reached by local bus 304 from near Kraków Główny station (45 min, $1.15) - no need for organized tours
Purchase an Urbancard (multi-day transit pass) from MPK Kraków outlets or ticket machines at major tram stops
In Zakopane, use local taxis to reach trailheads - walking from the center to Palenica Białczańska (for Morskie Oko) adds 2+ hours
