Getting Around Amasya 2026

Amasya is a historic city and province in north-central Turkey, set in a dramatic gorge on the Yeşilırmak river beneath the rocky heights of Mount Harşena. Known as the Şehzadeler Şehri, or City of Princes, where Ottoman heirs trained as provincial governors, Amasya is famous for its Pontic royal rock tombs carved into the cliffs, its riverside Ottoman timber mansions, and its sweet apples. The birthplace of the ancient geographer Strabo, it blends Hellenistic, Roman, Seljuk, and Ottoman heritage in one of Turkey's most scenic provincial towns.

Amasya's compact valley centre is served by municipal city buses and dolmuş minibuses, while regional TCDD trains on the Samsun-Sivas line and intercity coaches from the otogar handle longer journeys; there is no metro or tram

Taxi

Yellow metered taxis wait at ranks by the train station, otogar and main squares and can be flagged or phoned; fares are modest by European standards but ride-hailing apps such as Uber are not widely active in Amasya

Rental

A rental car is the most flexible way to reach the thermal springs, Borabay Lake and Hittite sites scattered across the province, with good roads and cheap fuel, though parking in the narrow riverside old town is tight

Walking

The historic core along the Yeşilırmak - the Ottoman houses, Hazeranlar Mansion, bazaar and the rock-cut royal tombs - is small, flat along the river and best explored entirely on foot
