Destination-level guidance on where money goes, what it buys and where costs can reasonably be reduced.

Travelling cheaply is mostly a question of structure rather than sacrifice. In most destinations, three decisions, namely timing, transport and accommodation, determine the great majority of the total cost, and the remaining line items are too small to rescue a badly built trip. Shifting dates either side of a peak, or into a shoulder month, tends to move the total further than any amount of careful daily economising.

Costs are not uniform within a country. Capitals and resort areas often run well above the prices of provincial towns an hour away, and a destination described as inexpensive may have internal flights, park fees or visa charges that dominate a short trip. It helps to separate fixed costs, which are set before departure, from daily spending, which is elastic. Compare the fixed side first: flights, long-distance transport, entry permits and anything that must be booked in advance.

The usual traps are hidden rather than obvious. Airport transfers, single supplements, dynamic currency conversion at card terminals, tourist taxes charged on arrival, and low fares that exclude baggage all fall outside the headline price. Where cash remains dominant, plan withdrawals to limit fees. Booking accommodation with free cancellation early, then checking again closer to the date, preserves flexibility without committing to a rate you cannot leave.
