Money-Saving Tips

Stretch your budget further with these insider tips.

💡

Buy the $25 Bagan Archaeological Zone pass (valid 5 days) — it covers all temples and saves buying individual tickets

💡

Book VIP overnight buses instead of domestic flights for Yangon-Bagan and Yangon-Mandalay routes and save $60-100

💡

Eat at local tea houses and Burmese restaurants rather than tourist restaurants — a full meal costs $3-6 versus $15-25

💡

Share long-tail boat costs at Inle Lake by coordinating with other guesthouse guests

💡

Rent an e-bike in Bagan ($5-8/day) instead of hiring a guide with car ($40-60/day)

💡

Avoid the luxury river cruises for intercity transport and use the $5 slow public ferry instead for the Bagan-Mandalay stretch

Free

Inwa Boat Crossing

The short ferry crossing to the ancient island capital of Inwa from Mandalay costs under $1 and the walk through the atmospheric ruins past monks and local villagers is essentially free.

Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Myanmar Kyat (MMK / K)

USD is widely accepted at hotels, tourist sites, and some restaurants. Carry crisp, unfolded USD notes as damaged or old bills are sometimes refused. Exchange at authorised moneychangers in cities for better rates than hotels.

ATMs

ATMs available in Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan, and Inle Lake area but frequently run out of cash or refuse foreign cards. CB Bank and KBZ Bank ATMs most reliable. Cash economy remains dominant.

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard accepted at higher-end hotels and some tourist restaurants. Never rely solely on cards — always carry cash.

Tipping

Not mandatory but appreciated; $1-2 at restaurants, $5-10/day for good tour guides, round up taxi fares

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • Bagan Archaeological Zone pass $25 often not mentioned in package prices
  • Domestic airport taxes added at check-in
  • Photography fees inside some temples and pagodas ($1-3)
  • Horse cart or e-bike rental not included in most day tour quotes
  • Power cuts may require hotel generator surcharge in budget properties
  • Foreign card ATM withdrawal fees typically $4-6 per transaction
