Money-Saving Tips

Stretch your budget further with these insider tips.

💡

Book domestic flights 2-3 months in advance on Cebu Pacific or AirAsia Philippines for fares as low as PHP 500-1,500 vs PHP 3,000-6,000 booked last-minute

💡

Eat where locals eat — carinderias (turo-turo eateries) serve generous Filipino meals for PHP 50-100; Jollibee and Mang Inasal meals cost PHP 60-120

💡

Take jeepneys and buses instead of Grab — city buses cost PHP 15-30 vs PHP 150-300 by Grab for the same route

💡

Visit beaches during shoulder season (November and June) when prices drop 20-40% and crowds are minimal

💡

Negotiate rates for accommodation outside of holiday weekends — guesthouses and small hotels often give 10-20% discounts if asked directly

💡

SIM card data is cheap — a PHP 299 Globe or Smart SIM with 30GB of data is far cheaper than using hotel WiFi or roaming charges

Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Philippine Peso (PHP). 1 USD ≈ 55-58 PHP (2024-2025). Coins in 1, 5, 10, 25 centavos and 1, 5, 10 peso. Bills in 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 peso.

ATMs offer the best exchange rates — use BancNet-affiliated machines (BDO, Metrobank, BPI, Security Bank). Airport money changers have acceptable but slightly worse rates. Avoid hotel exchange counters.

ATMs

Widely available in all cities and major tourist areas. Daily withdrawal limits typically PHP 10,000-20,000. Citibank and HSBC ATMs have higher limits. Remote islands may have no ATMs — bring sufficient cash.

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard accepted at hotels, malls, and upscale restaurants. Many local restaurants, markets, and smaller establishments are cash-only. GCash and PayMaya mobile payment are increasingly accepted.

Tipping

Not mandatory but appreciated. 10-15% at restaurants (check if service charge already included). PHP 20-50 for gas station attendants and parking valets. PHP 50-100 for exceptional hotel or tour service.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • Environmental and tourist fees at popular sites: El Nido permits PHP 200-400, Palawan environmental fee PHP 150, Boracay environmental fee PHP 75
  • Domestic airport terminal fees not always included in ticket prices: NAIA PHP 200-550 depending on terminal and route
  • Island hopping tour add-ons: park fees, life vest rental, and equipment charges often added on top of tour prices
  • Luggage storage at hostels and bus terminals: PHP 50-100 per day per bag
  • ATM foreign transaction fees: international banks charge $3-5 per withdrawal plus local bank fees
  • Typhoon disruption insurance: highly recommended November to December as typhoons can cancel ferries, domestic flights, and island tours
