Eat primarily at hawker centres and kopitiams — full meals from SGD 4-8 with drinks. Quality is genuinely excellent at the best stalls.
Use EZ-Link card or SimplyGo for all public transport — stored value fares are 10-20% cheaper than cash fares
Visit Gardens by the Bay, Merlion Park, and Southern Ridges for free instead of paying for every attraction
Book attractions online 2-3 days in advance for combo discounts — Zoo + River Safari + Night Safari packages save 20-30%
Fly Scoot, AirAsia, or Jetstar for regional day trips; Johor Bahru is free to enter and dramatically cheaper for shopping
Happy hour (5-8PM) at most bars cuts drink prices by half — get your first few rounds in before prices increase

Currency & Payment Tips
Essential information about money matters.
Currency
Singapore Dollar (SGD, S$)
ATMs at major banks (DBS, OCBC, UOB) give competitive rates. Money changers at Chinatown, Lucky Plaza (Orchard Road), and Mustafa Centre offer better rates than airport or hotel counters.
ATMs
Widely available islandwide. ATMs inside shopping malls and banks are most secure. Note: foreign card users pay SGD 5-7 ATM fee plus home bank charges.
Credit Cards
Visa and Mastercard accepted almost everywhere including hawker centres in newer complexes. Older stalls cash-only. Amex accepted at upscale venues. PayNow (QR code) widely used by locals.
Tipping
Not customary in Singapore. Service charge of 10% already added to most restaurant bills. No tip expected for taxis, hawker stalls, or retail. Optional tip of SGD 2-5 for hotel housekeeping.
Hidden Costs to Watch For
- GST (9%) and 10% service charge added to all restaurant bills in sit-down venues — 'atas' (upscale) food costs 19% more than the menu price
- Tourist SIM card from Changi Airport SGD 15-30 for 7-30 days data
- Sentosa Island access fee SGD 4 by car (pedestrian/MRT free since 2022)
- Luggage storage at Changi Airport SGD 10-25/day
- Alcohol is heavily taxed in Singapore — a beer at a bar costs SGD 10-16; bottle service is prohibitively expensive
