Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Euro (€) - EUR

Use ATMs (Geldautomat) with Mastercard/Visa for best exchange rates. Avoid airport exchange bureaus with 5-8% commission. Sparkasse and Deutsche Bank ATMs charge no fees for international cards in many cases.

ATMs

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, and larger shops. Small local shops, Bäckereien, and markets often cash only. Always carry some cash.

Tipping

Round up restaurant bills or tip approximately 10% by telling the waiter the total you want to pay. At bars, round up the bill. Not expected at fast food or bakeries. Tips go directly to staff.
