Money-Saving Tips

Stretch your budget further with these insider tips.

πŸ’‘

Use the metro (0.30 AZN) and buses (0.30 AZN) for city transport instead of taxis β€” Baku's metro is clean, safe, and covers all main tourist areas

πŸ’‘

Eat lunch at local chaykhanas (tea houses) and plov houses where a full meal costs 5-10 AZN β€” tourist-facing restaurants charge 3x more for similar food

πŸ’‘

Book accommodations outside Old City walls β€” hotels 10 minutes walk away cost 30-40% less for equivalent quality

πŸ’‘

Share a private taxi to Gobustan with other travelers β€” split the cost of a 40-50 AZN return trip instead of paying individually

πŸ’‘

Visit Taza Bazaar for fresh produce and snacks instead of buying bottled water and snacks at shops β€” much cheaper and better quality

πŸ’‘

Most major Baku museums (National History, Carpet, Heydar Aliyev Center) are free or discounted on the first Sunday of the month

Free & Cheap Activities

Experience Azerbaijan without spending a fortune.

Free

Baku Boulevard Walk

The 3.5km Caspian Sea promenade from the Old City to the Carpet Museum is entirely free, with fountains, gardens, sculpture gardens, and iconic views of the Flame Towers β€” the heart of Baku's outdoor life.

Free

Old City (Icheri Sheher) Exploration

Walking the UNESCO-listed medieval streets of Baku's walled inner city costs nothing β€” narrow alleys, ancient caravanserais, historic mosques, and oil-baron mansions are all free to wander and photograph.

Free

Flame Towers Light Show

Every evening at dusk, the three iconic Flame Towers illuminate in a spectacular LED light show visible from the Boulevard and Highland Park β€” Azerbaijan's most famous free spectacle.

Free

Fountain Square People-Watching

Baku's social heart is the lively pedestrian square surrounded by elegant 19th-century buildings, where locals gather to meet, musicians perform, and the city life unfolds freely.

Free

Gobustan Mud Volcanoes

The mud volcano field 12km south of Gobustan town (itself free to access by road) is open to visitors at no charge β€” one of the world's most unusual natural phenomena and entirely free.

Free

Bibi-Heybat Mosque Exterior

The stunning turquoise-domed mosque on the Caspian coast south of Baku is free to view from outside and beautiful to photograph, especially at sunset over the sea.

Free

Heydar Aliyev Center Exterior

Zaha Hadid's extraordinary flowing white building is free to walk around and photograph from all angles. The exterior is arguably more impressive than the interior exhibitions.

Free

Nizami Street Strolling

Baku's main pedestrian boulevard with elegant 19th and 20th century facades, window shopping, and street performers is the best free urban walk in Azerbaijan.

Free

Highland Park (ΕžΙ™hidlΙ™r XiyabanΔ±)

The hilltop park above the Old City offers panoramic views over Baku, the Flame Towers, and Caspian Sea. The Martyr's Lane memorial and eternal flame are free to visit and particularly atmospheric at sunset.

Free

Taza Bazaar Browsing

Wandering through Baku's largest market absorbing the sights, sounds, and smells of dried fruits, fresh herbs, spices, and local products costs nothing and provides an authentic local experience.

Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Azerbaijani Manat (AZN)

Use ATMs for best rates β€” exchange offices in airports and tourist areas offer poor rates. Avoid exchanging at hotels. ATMs at 24-hour Bravo supermarkets and bank branches offer fair rates.

ATMs

ATMs (bankomat) widely available across Baku. Less common outside the capital β€” carry cash when visiting Sheki, Quba, or rural areas. Kapital Bank and ABB Bank have the widest ATM networks.

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard accepted at hotels, major restaurants, and modern shops. Cash preferred at bazaars, local restaurants, and outside Baku. Amex rarely accepted.

Tipping

10% at restaurants is appreciated; 5-10 AZN for hotel porters and tour guides; round up taxi fares; not mandatory but always welcomed

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • Tourist registration fee if staying in private accommodation (technically required for stays over 10 days at migration office)
  • Gobustan National Park entry (7 AZN) often excluded from tour prices β€” confirm what is included
  • Photography fees at some museums (2-5 AZN for camera permit)
  • Luggage storage at Baku train station (3-5 AZN per item)
  • SIM card and data plan (15-30 AZN for 20GB monthly with Azercell)
  • Visa fee (25 AZN for standard 30-day e-Visa at evisa.gov.az)
