Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Czech Koruna (CZK) — approximately 24 CZK = $1 USD

Use ATMs affiliated with Czech banks (ČSOB, Komerční banka, Česká spořitelna) for best rates. Never use street money exchange offices even if they advertise 0% commission — their rates are extremely poor.

ATMs

ATMs widely available throughout Prague and all major cities. Withdraw CZK directly rather than using dynamic currency conversion at the machine. Most charge no foreign fees but check with your bank.

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard accepted almost everywhere including small restaurants and shops. American Express less widely accepted. Contactless payments (NFC) standard in most venues. Carry some cash for markets and small cafés.

Tipping

10-15% in sit-down restaurants if service was good — round up to nearest 50 CZK. Tip taxi drivers by rounding up. Not expected at fast food, supermarkets, or self-service venues.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • Tourist tax: Prague charges a local visitor fee (poplatek) of approximately $1-2/night, usually included in hotel bill
  • Prague Castle: entry to castle grounds is free but each major building (St. Vitus, Golden Lane) requires a paid circuit ticket ($10-18)
  • Public transport fines: 1,500 CZK ($65) fine for riding without a validated ticket — plain-clothes inspectors are active
  • Restaurant bread/extras: some tourist-area restaurants automatically bring bread or amuse-bouches and charge $2-5 for them — you can refuse
  • Luggage storage at Prague Main Station: $3-5 per item per day
  • SIM card: tourist SIMs from $10-15 at airport or Vodafone/T-Mobile shops; monthly unlimited data plans from $25
  • Highway vignette: if renting a car, a highway toll sticker (dálniÄŤnĂ známka) is required — 10-day pass $16, available at border crossings and gas stations
