Currency & Payment Tips
Essential information about money matters.
Currency
Mexican Peso (MXN)
Exchange USD or EUR at banks (Banamex, BBVA, Santander) for the best rates. Avoid airport exchange counters and hotel front desks which offer poor rates.
ATMs
ATMs (cajeros automáticos) are widely available in Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta. Use bank ATMs inside bank branches rather than standalone machines to avoid skimming. Cirrus/PLUS network cards work at most machines. Dynamic currency conversion fees can be high — always choose to pay in MXN.
Credit Cards
Visa and Mastercard accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and shops in cities. American Express less widely accepted. Cash needed at markets, street food, and smaller businesses. Inform your bank before traveling.
Tipping
10-15% at restaurants (Jalisco service charge not usually included), 20+ pesos for hotel housekeeping per night, 10-20 pesos for taxi/Uber tip, 5-10% for tour guides
Hidden Costs to Watch For
- Mexico tourism tax included in hotel rates (ISH) — verify if quoted price includes taxes
- SIM card with data: Telcel or AT&T Mexico SIM with 10GB data from $10-15 USD at airport or OXXO convenience stores
- Luggage storage at Guadalajara or Puerto Vallarta airports: $5-8 per bag per day
- Puerto Vallarta beach sun lounger rental: $5-15 per day at most beaches
- Whale watching and Marietas Islands tours: $60-120 per person are significant day trip costs
- Tequila distillery tour entry fees: $15-30 per person on top of Jose Cuervo Express train fare ($80-100)
- International flight to Guadalajara (GDL) or Puerto Vallarta (PVR) from US: typically $200-500 round trip from major US cities
