Money-Saving Tips

Stretch your budget further with these insider tips.

💡

Book all-inclusive packages from Europe — they are almost always cheaper than paying separately for accommodation, food, and activities

💡

Dive packages bought as a 10-dive block from dive centers are significantly cheaper than day-by-day bookings

💡

Stay in Hurghada's Ad-Dahar (old town) for accommodation costs 50-70% lower than the resort strip

💡

Take a shared minibus rather than a private taxi between Hurghada and Safaga or Quseir

💡

Eat breakfast and lunch at local Egyptian restaurants in Ad-Dahar — you'll pay 20-30% of resort restaurant prices

💡

PADI Open Water courses are significantly cheaper in Hurghada than in Europe or the USA — many visitors come specifically for this

💡

Visit in October-November or March-April (shoulder season) for 20-30% lower hotel rates than December-February peak

💡

June-August is cheapest (40-50% lower prices) but temperatures exceed 40°C — only for heat-tolerant travelers

💡

Hire snorkeling equipment from your hotel for the full stay rather than renting daily on boat trips

💡

The Giftun Island day trip price varies significantly between operators — shop around before booking

💡

Negotiating is expected for taxis, souvenirs, and some activity providers — the opening price is rarely the final price

💡

Egyptian SIM cards (Vodafone, Orange, Etisalat) cost $5-10 for 30 days of data — far cheaper than roaming charges

Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Egyptian Pound (EGP)

Exchange currency at banks or official exchange bureaux for the best legal rates. Airport and hotel exchange desks give poor rates. As of 2025, approximately 49 EGP to 1 USD.

ATMs

ATMs are widely available in Hurghada, El Gouna, and Marsa Alam. Most accept Visa and Mastercard. Some ATMs in smaller towns may be unreliable — carry sufficient EGP from Hurghada.

Credit Cards

Major hotels and restaurants accept Visa and Mastercard. Cash is essential for smaller restaurants, markets, local transport, and dive center day payments.

Tipping

10-15% at sit-down restaurants. $5-10 per person per day for dive guides. $10-20 per day for private tour guides. Hotel housekeeping: 20-50 EGP per day. Compulsory service charge is sometimes added to hotel restaurant bills.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • Diving equipment rental if not included in dive package: $10-20/day for wetsuit, BCD, and regulator
  • Reef-safe sunscreen: standard sunscreens are increasingly restricted in marine parks — reef-safe brands cost $15-25
  • Park entry fees at Marsa Alam National Park and Giftun Island: $5-15 per day
  • Underwater photography: GoPro rentals available from dive centers at $20-30/day
  • Tourist tax added to some hotel bills: $2-5/night
  • Egypt e-Visa application fee: $25 USD applied online before arrival
  • Travel insurance with dive coverage: divers should have specialist dive insurance; standard travel insurance often excludes diving
  • Liveaboard fuel surcharges: some liveaboard operators add fuel surcharges on top of advertised prices — check before booking
  • Tips for dive guides on liveaboards: convention is $10-15 per day per guide
